This costume took me a good while to complete. It was not very complicated, but very time consuming. I bought a lot of yarn (coupons and sales) to make this happen. There is a picture of the yarn I used below. I thought it was a pretty good color match to Chewbacca’s fur. I probably used at least 7 or more bundles of yarn.
Part of the idea got started when I saw a homemade costume on Pinterest, and I really thought it was cool. Then I was given a mesh sweatshirt (I think it may have been some sort of swimsuit cover up?), and I thought I might be able to do this. For the pants, I used a dollar store mesh laundry hamper and just sowed up the middle to make two separate legs. I even used the laundry bags drawstrings to tighten my “pants” around my waste.
Then came the tedious part. I cut a bunch of same sized pieces of yarn, and, using my crochet hook, pulled them through one by one. ONE BY ONE. It took forever. I would just pull it out and work on it while watching TV.
For the face, I cut the mesh where I thought the eyes and mouth should go. I added a piece of mesh to cover the space from the hood to the sweatshirt using a piece of the laundry basket.
Then, as if that wasn’t enough work, I thought it would look better to undo the pieces of yarn, to make it look fluffier. So I unraveled all of the MANY pieces and I think it made it look a lot better. In this picture you can see one side is undone and the other is the original yarn piece.
it was time consuming but worth it. I don’t really have a good picture of how I did the face, but mainly I used a hot glue gun and hairspray to get the main shape. I added a painted piece of cardboard for the nose. The sash was made from a scarf, and the little ammo pieces are again, painted cardboard. I think the end result was pretty cool.
