This year, my oldest decided on a Harry Potter themed birthday party. Her choice of piñata was Hedwig, Harry Potters owl.

To start with, she sat with me as I was sketching it out, to get the general shape. She was able to design it exactly as she wanted it (that is the benefit of having your mom make your piñata lol). Once we got the basic shape, we cut it out two times, one front and one back piece. I used my x-acto knife, I like it better than using scissors (X-ACTO 1 Knife, Z Series With Safety Cap)
Next, we cut some 3ish inch wide long strips of card board, that will become the side of the pinata. You can make it as wide or as narrow as you want. With supervision, my oldest helped me to hot glue the side to the owl piece. Mine is a cheap little thing, but it’s fantastic and has lasted forever (Ad-Tech Mini Hi-Temp Hot Glue Gun Combo Pack White). Don’t forget to leave a tiny space unglued, so you can stick the candy in it later.
This is a good time to reinforce the top of the piñata with extra card board, so it won’t tear through while the kids are hitting it. Poke a hole through the top, and tie a rope (I made mine out of left over yarn) onto the piñata.
Next, I glued on the second half of the owl. That is it, for the basic shape. We filled it with candy and glued the flap closed (the one we left open earlier). Now for the decorating.
I use crepe paper and cut little slits into. I have used glue sticks in the past, but this time I ran out of them, so I just used my hot glue gun, and it worked better than the glue stick. It does get a little tedious, but you just wrap and wrap and wrap and wrap the crepe paper until the whole piñata is covered. Lastly, the eyes are made from construction paper, and that completes the owl!
Did you make the slits on the crepe paper before putting it in, or after? Where did you buy the crepe paper? Thank you!
I used about half a 200 ft roll. My owl was about 25″ by 18″ by 4″
How many rolls of crepe paper did you use?
Probably about two rolls of the white, I had to double up on some of them because white is so see-through.
