1. Every year I make handmade ornaments for family and friends, and it is getting increasingly difficult to come up with new ideas. This year’s ornament turned out totally different than what I normally make. It’s a little 3-D igloo, with little penguins!

For these, I use polymer clay, pretty much any brand.

So to start with, I roll out some white clay to the thickness that I want, and use a circle cookie cutter to make the base. The shape of the igloo took me a little bit of trial and error, because I wanted it thick enough to be able to hang from. For the little lines I used a pointy clay tool, just be careful not to poke it all the way through.

Next are the cute little penguins. I made lots and lots and lots of them! They were super simple, just a little ball of black and a oval shaped white circle on top.

For the details, I find it easiest to use a little X-Acto blade, it’s perfect for tiny pieces like the nose or the arms. As you can see below, I basically made a whole army of penguins. Just for fun, I added little snowballs into their arms.

Next, I added little presents and the hook, for it to hang. I also was trying to decide whether or not I should add the lights, so here’s a picture of both ways.

Since I make them for family and friends, I match the number of penguins to the number of kids in their family. So each ornament has a different arrangement of penguins.
