Now that we have figured out how to make piñata’s, we are on a roll! For her birthday this year, my five year old requested a unicorn piñata. So we did what we normally do…which is to browse Pinterest. After looking at way too may unicorns, she finally picked one.

Supplies I used:
– a large cardboard box
– good scissors or  X-ACTO 1 Knife, Z Series With Safety Cap – I much prefer this over scissors, especially since I currently don’t have a GOOD pair of scissors.
– Pencil (for tracing)
Adtech Mini Hi-Temp Hot Glue Gun Combo Pack – This is what I use. It is a cheap little thing, but it has lasted me through MANY projects and is still going strong.
– Gorilla Hot Glue Sticks, Mini Size, 4″ Long x .27″ Diameter, 30 Count, Clear, (Pack of 1)
– LOTS of crepe paper (whatever colors you want to use)
– glue sticks
– card stock paper for the unicorn horn and eyes
– yarn (in stead of rope, I used yarn – braided in multiple layers – to hang the piñata up
– and of course, CANDY!!

To start with, I freehanded the shape (based on the picture I had pulled up on my phone) in pencil, erasing and redrawing as I went. After the shape was finished, I cut out the unicorn. I left the horn off, we are going to add that later. I used the first shape to trace the second one.

Next, you need a long strip of cardboard. Mine was about 3 inches thick, but it depends on how wide you want your piñata. After cutting the long strip, you can start hot gluing it to one of the sides of the unicorn.

The second side is a little more awkward, but same idea. I left the second side of the head unglued, to leave a place to fill it with candy. I also reinforced the inside (by the ears) with an extra few layers of cardboard. I poked holes all the way through, so the string that will hang the piñata will have somewhere to go. I did not think to get a better picture of how the extra pieces of cardboard look on the inside, but you can see the holes in this next picture. After attaching the string (an old jump rope works great), my birthday girl filled it with candy. Then, I sealed off the rest of the piñata with my glue gun.

Now we are on the last step. Decorating it. This is pretty tedious, but all you need is lots of glue sticks (not hot glue), and streamers. My child wanted a white horse with rainbow hair. We cut little slits in the streamers, put the glue down on the pinata and just wrapped the streamers around the piñata piece by piece. The eye could be printed out, but I just cut shapes out of some paper that we already had.

The hair is just little tiny long strips of the streamers glued together. I cut a small hole where they hair should go, and stuck the glued end of the streamers inside, topping it off with my hot glue gun (to make sure it does not fall out). At the very end, rolled up a glittery piece of scrapbook paper to make the shape of the horn, and then glued it to the unicorn.

I think it turned out fantastic. The birthday girl LOVED it, so much so, that I was afraid she wouldn’t let us hit it!
